Lazie Indie Magazine Is Not What You Think It Is: A Founder’s Reflection — 6 Years On

By Jay Pillai

Life has a way of taking you to places you never imagined you would arrive at. Not through planning. Not through precision. But through moments that feel small when they happen… and defining when you look back.

As Lazie Indie Magazine marks its sixth year in 2026, I find myself pausing—not out of habit, but out of genuine emotion. If someone had told me in 1991 that I would create a magazine embraced by artists across the world, I wouldn’t have believed them.

Because a magazine… was never part of the story.

Where It Really Began

My journey with music began decades ago with no larger vision waiting to unfold; just curiosity, passion, and a need to create something that felt like my own. Over time, one truth became impossible to ignore: Music does not belong to geography. It belongs to people.

And yet—those people rarely met across borders. Lazie Indie didn’t begin as a solution; it began as a bridge.

When Everything Stopped

In 2020, the world didn’t just slow down. It stopped. In that stillness came a realization that independent voices still need independent platforms. I began to write, to document, and to shape conversations into something that would last. When Lazie Indie Magazine began, there were no guarantees—only intent. The intent to listen more than speak, to document rather than dictate, and to support artists without hierarchy or prejudice.

The Advice I Didn’t Follow

Somewhere along the way, I was told that helping indie musicians was a waste of time. I listened, I considered it, and then I let it go. This journey was never about seeking greatness or transaction; it was about the cause we stand for and building meaning through community.

A Shared Commitment

Lazie Indie did not grow because of scale. It grew because of a collective belief and the people who chose to show up—individuals with full lives who chose to give. To honor the spirit of this journey, I reflect on those who have held the line with equal stature and unwavering dedication:

  • Inge Zimmermann-Probst: Our Chief Verifier and Proofreader since inception who has ensured our quality with open ears and a vibrant musical spirit.

  • Emma Goldberg: A popular musician and radio host who has seen this platform as pure freedom from the corporate grind for over five years.

  • Lyia Meta: A multi-award-winning recording artist and jazz-pop vocalist who shares reflections on the stories and creativity that shape our experiences.

  • Kathryn Shipley: A multiple award-winning musician and columnist who artfully brings the "why" and the authentic life of an independent artist to our pages.

  • Barbara and Grant: Iconic radio hosts who recognized that our vision for independent growth partners perfectly with their own.

  • Tomiko Dixon: The granddaughter of Blues legend Willie Dixon, she works closely with iconic Blues musicians and Blues Hall of Famers to link musical heritage with modern artist empowerment.

  • Sherise D’Souza: An award-winning vocalist and Recording Academy member columnist who uses her platform to feature and uplift fellow artists with gratitude.

  • Harikrishnan: A columnist covering the Indian music scene and bringing forward some of its most fabulous artists.

  • Dr. Benita: A musician and host who has championed our vision and helped us achieve award-winning status.

  • Songdew: Indias largest music community presents artists from a massive pool of talented musicians from its national and international networks.

  • Ann Aria and Jorg: Early contributors whose shared purpose and belief in independent music helped sustain our community across the globe.

Beyond Labels: What Lazie Indie Really Is

People try to define us. A magazine? A passion project? A phenomenon? It is none of these—and all of them.

This platform stands out for the way it champions independent musicians with care and integrity. Because it has become a respected space for discovery, having one's story shared here has become a "badge of honor" within the indie community. It is a vital force that encourages new talent all around the world. But more than anything, it is built on a simple idea: A musician supporting another musician without expecting anything in return.

What Time Reveals

Time reveals that community, when nurtured honestly, sustains itself.

Being part of this journey feels less like being featured in a magazine and more like belonging to a community that truly understands the spirit of freedom—the freedom to be honest, to evolve, and to create without compromise. We have seen this platform humanize the journey of the musician, making their stories relatable and inspiring to a global audience. It creates a respectful and supportive environment where artists often become friends, broadening worlds and brightening lives.

The Truth Is Simple

Lazie Indie Magazine was never designed. It was discovered. Built slowly. Shaped by faith. Held together not by structure—but by belief.

Here’s to the journey so far, and to everything we continue to build together.
